LEEP
( Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure)

Local anesthesia is used for this procedure.Your Doctor may suggest this procedure be done to remove the abnormal cells that may show up from your pap smear. This procedure allows new healthy cells to grow from where the abnormal cells were removed.

The Procedure- LEEP uses a thin wire loop that acts like a scalpel (surgical knife). An electric current is passed through the loop, which cuts away a thin layer of the surface cells. Anesthsia is injected into your cervix so you will not feel this procedure being performed. The loop is inserted through the vagina to the cervix. After the procedure, a special medicine is applied to the cevix to stop any bleeding. The tissue that is removed will be studied at the lab to confirm a diagnosis.

Recovery- It may take a few weeks for your cervix to heal. While your cervix heals, you may have:
-Vaginal bleeding
-Mild cramping
-A brownish-black discharge

For a few weeks after the procedure you should avoid the following:
-sex
-Tampons
- Douches

If you have any of the following problems call the Doctor Immediatly:

-Heavy bleeding (more than your normal period)
-Bleeding with clots
-Severe abdonminal pain
-Fever (more than 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit)
-Vaginal odor
